Lawyer: Poundstone Will Walk

If you believe Paula Poundstone's attorney, the comedian will be free and clear of child-abuse charges in a couple of weeks.

Poundstone, who's facing four felony charges involving her adoptive and foster kids, made an appearance at the Santa Monica courthouse Monday morning for a hearing, but let her lawyer, Steven Cron, do all the talking.

Cron said the 41-year-old entertainer "is not a child molester."

"I'll ask to have [the charges] dismissed at the end of the preliminary hearing," Cron said. "I don't think there's enough evidence. I'm very confident that we will prevail. Whether we'll prevail at a preliminary hearing or whether it would have to go to trial or not, I don't know."

In any case, Cron thinks Poundstone, who faces up to 13 years in prison if convicted, will walk away with a clean slate when all is said and done.

The comedian pleaded innocent in July to three counts of lewd conduct involving a girl under 14 and another count of child endangerment on two boys and two girls. She's also been barred from seeing her own children without supervision while the case is pending. She remains free on $200,000 bail.

Since her arrest, Cron has revealed Poundstone has been battling alcoholism and in fact was in a live-in rehab program when she was arrested on June 27.

He said Monday she was making strides toward recovery.

"Although she's still in rehab, she is seeing the children regularly," Cron said. "She is making progress in rehab, and we're looking forward to the day when she can be reunited on a full-time basis with her children."

Cron has previously said he plans to make Poundstone's alcohol abuse a key part of her defense.

Poundstone is due back in court for some last-minute legal wrangling on September 5 and her preliminary hearing date has been set for September 11.
