L.A. Critics Like "Confidential"

L.A. Confidential remained perfect in year-end, best-of polling, capturing the Best Picture award from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Saturday night.

In all, the noirish gem picked up four citations, including nods to director Curtis Hanson, writers Hanson and Brian Helgeland and Best Cinematography, Dante Sinotti. The film was named runner-up in two categories: Kevin Spacey in the Best Supporting Actor category and Jeanine Oppewall and her evocative '50s scenes finished second in the production design ranks.

So far, Confidential has cleaned up in the pre-Oscar race, taking home top honors from the Los Angeles Film Critics, the New York Film Critics and the National Board of Review. It is easily the best bet for Oscar.

The other film that charmed Left Coast critics was Boogie Nights, a meditation on the porn industry circa late '70s. Burt Reynolds has officially resuscitated his once-dead career, winning Best Supporting Actor as a porn peddler/father figure and cementing his front-runner status in the Academy Awards derby. (He was named top supporting player by the New York critics as well.) Costar Julianne Moore was named Best Supporting Actress. Writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson won the New Generation Award for up-and-coming player.

Best-acting trophies went to Robert Duvall, for his sociopathic preacher in The Apostle, and Helena Bonham Carter, for her scheming Victorian shenanigans in The Wings of the Dove.

Bridesmaid's award goes to Atom Egoyan's The Sweet Hereafter, which finished second to Confidential in Best Picture and Best Director categories. Despite some support as Best Picture, James Cameron's Titanic was shut out of the major awards, winning only for its sumptuous production design (Peter Lamont). Would-be Oscar-hopefuls like Steven Spielberg's Amistad, Woody Allen's Deconstructing Harry and Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown couldn't muster any trophies.
