Kylie Upbeat Despite Cancer

Some encouraging news for pop star Kylie Minogue.

The Aussie songbird, who is facing surgery this week for breast cancer, has received a promising prognosis from her doctors: The potentially deadly disease was caught at an early stage and has not spread.

"Kylie is currently undergoing tests at a first class medical facility in Melbourne in preparation for an operation this week by one of Australia's leading surgeons," her manager, Terry Blarney, said in a brief statement Thursday. "Thankfully tests so far have confirmed the earlier diagnosis that the cancer appears to be confined to the breast."

Minogue announced she was battling cancer on Tuesday.

The health crisis forced the 36-year-old "Love at First Sight" warbler to indefinitely postpone the Australian leg of her Showgirl tour, which had been set to kick off in Sydney on Thursday. She also nixed an appearance at Britain's annual Glastonbury Festival.

Once word on the diagnosis got out, Minogue's Kylie.com Website was bombarded by traffic from fans seeking more information on her condition and wanting to wish her well via the message board. So many people hit the site that it wound up crashing. After briefly being taken down, a scaled-down version of the site was back online Thursday.

"Due to the overwhelming response to [the cancer] news and the vast numbers of visitors to the site, Kylie.com is operating a reduced service to cope with the increased traffic," a note on the site said. "You will be able to keep up-to-date with the latest official news as it is announced on this home page and we hope to have the full site up and running again very shortly."

Minogue, who shot to fame in the 1980s as a star on the popular Australian soap opera Neighbours before segueing to music with hits like "I Should Be So Lucky" and her redo of "The Loco-Motion," said she was touched by the outpouring.

"My heartfelt thanks to the incredible number of people who have sent messages of love and support over the last two days," the petite popster said on her Website. "I want to reassure you that I am being well taken care of."

Minogue added that her current beau, French actor Olivier Martinez, has flown in to be with her; there were also reports that her sister, Dannii, was flying in from London to help her through her ordeal.

The entertainer also had a message for her fellow compatriots fighting the disease.

"I would also like to extend my best wishes to all of the other women around Australia and around the world who are dealing with the same illness," she added.

Minogue has been a supporter of breast cancer research in recent years. A bra she donated brought in $4,415 at an auction benefiting the U.K.-based Breast Cancer Care three years ago.

Minogue has charted 37 singles in the U.K. in the last decade. She made her U.S. comeback with 2002 Fever, which reached number three on the Billboard charts and sold more than 3 million albums, thanks to her dance tune "Can't Get You out of My Head."
