Krakowski Lands on "Rock"

Jane Krakowski is ready to Rock.

The Ally McBeal sexpot will join Alec Baldwin, Tina Fey, Rachel Dratch and Tracy Morgan on the new NBC meta-comedy, 30 Rock.

Not to be confused with the Peacock's now-defunct 3rd Rock from the Sun, 30 Rock takes a satirical look at the behind-the-scenes of a fictional late-night sketch comedy series called The Girlie Show.

The 37-year-old Krakowski will play the star of the live variety program, who mixes it up with the show's single head writer, Lemon (Fey), and a meddling network executive named Jack Donaghy (Baldwin), who is determined to have things done his way.

"Jane is enormously talented and everyone is thrilled that she is joining the cast. I think it's going to be a perfect fit," said executive producer Lorne Michaels, who also happens to be the mastermind behind SNL, where Fey, Dratch and Morgan made their names.

Krakowski won an Emmy and was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role as loopy Elaine Vassal on Fox's groundbreaking and quirky hit, Ally McBeal, which wrapped its successful five-year run in 2002.

The actress, also an accomplished singer and dancer, went on to appear in the 2003 Broadway revival of Nine, opposite Antonio Banderas for which she snagged a Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics award. She also earned an Olivier award costarring with Ewan McGregor in London's West End production of Guys and Dolls.

Krakowski, who as every film geek knows made her big-screen debut as Cousin Vickie in 1983's Vacation, recently appeared in theaters in the Alfie remake with Jude Law.

Her other tube credits include a guest stint on NBC's Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and the WB's Everwood as well plum parts in the 2002 ABC family movie Just a Walk in the Park and 2004's A Christmas Carol with Kelsey Grammer.

In other news from the Rock set, Michaels has been doing some last-minute adjustments with his cast.

Per Variety, Dratch was supposed to play only one role, an actress named Jenna DeCarlo on the new series, but at Michaels' behest, the part was scrapped. Instead, she will now appear in 30 Rock playing multiple roles. For example, in one episode she'll play a cat wrangler, while other episodes will see playing other various comic personas--some of whom will recur later while others might appear only once.

The reason for the change, said the veteran producer, was to take advantage of the comedic skills Dratch perfected during her seven-year tenure on Saturday Night Live.

"Both Tina and I obviously adore Rachel, and we wanted to find a way in which we could go to her strength," he told Variety. "The way it's been rewritten, it's a much funnier part."

Both Dratch and Fey gave notice they were leaving SNL at the end of last season, leaving a gap that apparently won't be filled. Michaels said the long-running sketch comedy series is paring down its cast this year from 16 members to somewhere around 10, partly due to budget constraints from NBC.

"It's going to be a smaller cast for lots of reasons?last year was a big transition year for us," he noted, adding that the budget cuts are not limited to Saturday Night Live, but affected other shows as well.
