Koppel Keeps Plenty Busy

His run at Nightline might be history, but that doesn't mean Ted Koppel is.

The venerable broadcast journalist, who exited his post as senior editor and host of the ABC news show in November, is now busier than ever, with new gigs at National Public Radio, the New York Times and the Discovery Channel.

The NPR and Times deals were announced Thursday. A week ago, Koppel was named managing editor of Discovery as part of deal that will see him and several of his old Nightline staffers make news documentaries for the cable network.

Koppel will serve as a senior news analyst for NPR, providing commentaries on such programs as Morning Edition, All Things Considered and Day to Day approximately 50 times a year. He'll also offer perspective on breaking news stories and special events coverage and will be featured prominently on NPR's Website, www.npr.org, and its Podcasts.

"I have been an unabashed fan of NPR for many years and have stolen untold excellent ideas from its programming," Koppel says in a statement. "It's time to give something back."

The deal is a one-year job, with Koppel having the option to extend it.

"Ted and NPR are a natural fit, with curiosity about the world and commitment to getting to the heart of the story," says Jay Kernis, senior vice president of NPR programming. "The role of news analyst has been a tradition on NPR newsmagazines and there is no one better-qualified to uphold and grow that tradition than Ted."

The in-demand Koppel will also begin work as a contributing columnist for the New York Times beginning Jan. 29. He'll pen periodic pieces for the Grey Lady's op-ed and opinion sections.

"There is no more respected or influential forum in the field of journalism than the New York Times," says Koppel. "I look forward, with great anticipation, to contributing to its op-ed page."

But wait, there's more. Koppel will produce six long-form documentaries a year for the Discovery Channel over a three-year span, with the first due in late summer/early fall.

Since Koppel quit Nightline, ABC has junked the traditional in-depth, single-subject format and gone with the three-headed monster of Cynthia McFadden, Martin Bashir and Terry Moran covering multiple stories in a magazine-style broadcast.
