Knoxville Smacks into Divorce Court
For his next stunt, Johnny Knoxville will try to pull off an official split.
The Jackass impresario filed for divorce Tuesday from wife Melanie Lynn Clapp after nearly 12 years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for the breakup.
Knoxville, whose real name is listed in court documents as Philip John Clapp, is seeking joint custody of the couple's 11-year-old daughter, Madison, according to the petition filed in Los Angeles Superior Court and obtained by E! Online. (View the petition.)
The two have acquired what the legal system terms "community property" over the years, and Knoxville is willing to pay spousal support.
But while the 36-year-old actor is just getting around to filling out the paperwork (one of Knoxville's signatures on the petition filed today is dated Jan. 23, 2007), he and Melanie have been separated since July 17, 2006.
The duo, who confirmed their estrangement in February, parted ways amid all sorts of rumors of infidelity on his part, including reports of an affair with Dukes of Hazzard costar Jessica Simpson—all accusations that Knoxville repeatedly denied.
"Usually you just laugh and go on. [But] if it's something like they've done to Jessica and I, it's not as funny because I have a wife and kid," he told reporters in August 2005. "Luckily, my wife is understanding. It's show business."
The Texas native most recently lit up the big screen—and a few ambulance lights—in Jackass: Number Two, which was made for $11.2 million and grossed more than $84 million worldwide. In the pipeline for Knoxville is the heist thriller Killshot, based on the Elmore Leonard novel.
