Kirsten, Jake Kaput

One of Tinseltown's hottest twosomes has officially uncoupled.

Kirsten Dunst and Jake Gyllenhaal have confirmed through their respective reps that they're no longer an item.

No reason was given for the split, but it was said to be amicable.

"Kirsten and Jake remain the best of friends," Dunst's publicist, Steven Huvane, said in a statement. "Details regarding when and why their romantic relationship stopped are not being provided, but suffice it to say it happened some time ago. They are still very close."

Dunst, 22, and Gyllenhaal, 23, first hooked up in September 2002, after being introduced by Jake's sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal, who costarred with Dunst in Mona Lisa Smile.

As carefully chronicled in the pages of People, Us Weekly and Star magazine, the former fun couple had shacked up in a $1.7 million home in Los Angeles. They even shared a dog, adopting a German shepherd puppy.

Reports suggest that demanding film schedules--a result of both their burgeoning careers--might have taken its toll.

Dunst, a respected actress since her debut opposite Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt in Interview with the Vampire, has racked up an impressive rsum, moving from indie fare like Sofia Coppola's acclaimed 1999 film The Virgin Suicides to teen flicks like 2000's Bring It On to full on blockbusters, playing Mary Jane Watson in 2002's Spider-Man and this summer's hugely successful sequel.

Gyllenhaal hasn't exactly been a slouch. After breaking through in 1999's October Sky, he became the go-to guy for quirky teen roles in indie films (Donnie Darko, Bubble Boy, Moonlight Mile and The Good Girl) and is now making the transition to heartthrob thanks to this summer's global warming disaster flick, The Day After Tomorrow.
