Kings of All Media Spat

Will Rupert Murdoch call Howard Stern? And if he does, will the call be real or fake?

The "King of All Media" has thrown down the gauntlet to the Fox media mogul.

Stern is irate at Murdoch's New York Post for a run of anti-Howard stories, including the tittle-tattle today by ex-pal and show regular Mark Harris about how call-ins on the radio program are sometimes phony.

On today's show, Stern challenged the Post owner to ring in to say he's "putting a stop to all the crap" the paper has been writing about him.

If Murdoch doesn't call within two days, Stern says he's going to blab everything he knows about the secretive mega-media tycoon--including the guy's home address. (That would be in retaliation for the Post recently giving readers a pretty good idea where Stern's new Manhattan digs are.)

The final straw, for Stern, was today's article about Harris, attention-seeker, cabaret artist and Martha Raye widower.

Harris, angry at Stern for foisting a polygraph test on him on air last week, told the Post he's planning a tell-all book about the show. In it, he said he'll write about phony phone calls and about how everyone except Robin Quivers is afraid of Stern.

"A lot of former interns" will help him spill the beans, Harris said, because Stern "has hurt a lot of people. He has been acting like Hitler."

Stern, Harris added to the Post, has gotten "meaner and less funny" because his CBS late-night talker is "in the toilet," and snipes that the radio host "relies on Jackie (The Joke Man) Martling to push questions and one-liners under his nose on the air."

Harris claims at least two publishers are interested in his book proposal.

Stern said onair today he's not that mad at Harris--it's Murdoch and the Post he's pissed at.
