The King and Queen Rule the Charts

It's good to be the King...and the Queen.

In an otherwise slow sales week, Elvis Presley, the King of Rock 'n' Roll, and Mary J. Blige, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, held court over the charts. Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel" reigned supreme on the singles side, while Blige's The Breakthrough recaptured the top slot on the Billboard 200, based on Nielsen SoundScan sales figures released Wednesday.

Fifty years after initial debut, Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel" sold 4,200 copies for the week ended Sunday. The track, originally recorded in 1956 two days after his 21st birthday, was Presley's first number one hit. The rereleased version is part of the new Elvis #1 Singles box set, the umpteenth collection of his biggest cuts.

Meanwhile, with no major releases cracking the Top 40 on the album chart, the only drama was between Blige and Jamie Foxx, who have been jockeying for bragging rights since they were released on Dec. 20.

The Breakthrough topped Foxx's Unpredictable that first week, but for the two subsequent charts, the positions flip-flopped. Now, Blige is back on top, selling 118,000 copies to Unpredictable's 103,000.

In the big picture, Blige is also besting the Oscar-winning Ray star: The Breakthrough's four-week tally sits at 1.16 million copies to Unpredictable's 1.03 million.

Moving into the Top 10 was R&B rookie sensation Chris Brown, whose eponymous debut climbed four spots to eight with another 47,000 in sales. Meanwhile the Johnny Cash anthology The Legend of Johnny Cash sold 40,000 copies to reach the 10 spot. The collection is currently about 60,000 discs shy of the million-copy mark.

Overall album sales for the late country legend continue to surge thanks to the Cash biopic Walk the Line. With the film winning Golden Globes for Best Picture, Musical/Comedy and acting trophies for stars Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon, expect the trend to continue.

The week's top entrant, Truth by SoCal hardcore act Bleeding Through, opened at 48 with 17,000 copies. Also making a splash: Morningwood's self-titled at 102 and the Underworld Evolution soundtrack at 106.

With no big releases next week, the Blige-Foxx tug-o-war should continue, though watch for Carrie Underwood to surge with the new season of American Idol officially underway.

Here's a list of the Top 10 albums for the week ended Sunday:

1. The Breakthrough, Mary J. Blige
2. Unpredictable, Jamie Foxx
3. Some Hearts, Carrie Underwood
4. Curtain Call, Eminem
5. Duets: The Final Chapter, Notorious B.I.G.
6. The Emancipation of Mimi, Mariah Carey
7. All the Right Reasons, Nickelback
8. Chris Brown, Chris Brown
9. Monkey Business, Black Eyed Peas
10. The Legend of Johnny Cash, Johnny Cash
