Kim's Pull-Out Kills "Sex" Movie
Samantha has had quite enough Sex, thankyouverymuch.
Kim Cattrall has announced that she will not be reprising her Emmy-nominated, man-eating Samatha Jones role in a planned Sex and the City movie.
Cattrall's sudden exit, confirmed in a statement from her publicist Tuesday, led to HBO scuttling the project, which had been on the drawing board since the style-making dramedy ended its six-season run on the cable channel in February.
According to publicist Marvet Britto, Cattrall was forced to abstain from the Sex flick because of scheduling. HBO had asked Cattrall and costars Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis to hang in beyond the arranged 'hold' period. In other words, the quartet was supposed to avoid making other commitments while HBO decided whether to greenlight series executive producer Michael Patrick King's script.
"Kim felt fortunate to have enjoyed six wonderful years, both personally and professionally, playing Samantha on Sex and the City," Britto said. "She would have loved to have done the movie and made a deal to do the movie, but waited as long as possible with no script or start date and felt she had to take other offers that were presented to her after the hold period had passed.
"Kim would of course love to do the film and would be happy to revisit the project in the future," Britto added.
HBO apparently felt that the city wouldn't be the same without Cattrall's Jones around and the network didn't want to wait for Cattrall to finish her other projects, so the net killed the movie. (Of course, in Hollywood one learns never to say never--who knows, we might get that TV reunion movie if the actress' careers begin to dry up.)
The abrupt exit also prompted Variety to speculate that the network wasn't willing to tolerate Cattrall's diva act. The trade paper reports Cattrall was demanding script approval--which none of the show's stars have, including Parker, who also produced the TV version--and a salary equivalent to Parker's. For years, the show has been dogged by rumors of behind-the-scenes bickering between Parker and Cattrall.
An HBO company representative would only state, "We've had six wonderful years with the show, and we're extremely proud of what we've accomplished."
Cattrall is currently working on Ice Princess, a Disney rom-com shooting in Toronto, in which she plays an ice-skating coach. According to Variety, Cattrall also plans to produce a documentary titled Sexual Intelligence.
While Sex won't be playing at the cinema in the forseeable future, a tamer version of the TV show is about to begin airing on basic cable. TBS will broadcast two episodes back-to-back each Tuesday night beginning June 15. TBS will eventually rerun all six seasons of the show.
