Kim Basinger's Dad: Alec Gets Angry

The public usually only sees Alec Baldwin angry when facing down pesky paparazzi or sparring with right-wingers on Politically Incorrect.

But according to the father of his now estranged actress-wife, Kim Basinger, Baldwin's fiery temper was a key reason why she filed for divorce January 12.

"I've known for a year and a half that she was thinking about this," Basinger's father, Don, tells People magazine, in a report hitting newsstands Friday. "I love Alec. He's the most kind and generous man I've ever known in my life, and he's overcome some very difficult things." All, he says, "but one: his anger."

After seven years of marriage, the Oscar-winning, 47-year-old actress filed for divorce in Los Angeles Superior Court, citing "irreconcilable differences." But Basinger's dad tells the celeb-obsessed mag that Baldwin was verbally abusive to his wife in public and private, but "when it started happening in front of [their 5-year-old daughter] Ireland, Kim finally said, 'Well, I'm not going to put up with that.'"

Baldwin reportedly spent the holidays with Basinger and family, despite having separated with his wife on December 5. Their daughter has been in Basinger's custody in Los Angeles since the breakup, while Baldwin has been staying at the couple's New York home.

People magazine quotes friends of Baldwin who say the star of the just-released State and Main was "sad" about the breakup. Baldwin's publicist was not immediately available for comment on the magazine's report.

This, however, isn't the first tale about Baldwin's demeanor. The 42-year-old actor was ordered to pay $4,500 after a 1995 incident in which Baldwin broke the nose of a photographer who staked out his home following the birth of their daughter. More recently, tabloids snapped shots of the couple arguing outside of a restaurant.

Don Basinger, 77, a retired loan manager, tells People his daughter warned Baldwin about his temper and urged him to seek counseling, But he says "Alec goes one time, two times, then quits."

Despite the harsh comments, the elder Basinger says Baldwin "will always be welcome in my home" and hopes the pair remain cordial. "Who knows?" he said. "They might even get back together a year or two from now."
