Kidman Quits "Producers"
Springtime's for Hitler, not, apparently, Nicole Kidman.
The leggy Oscar winner has bowed out of playing sexy secretary to Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick in Mel Brooks' big-screen adaptation of his smash Tony-winning musical The Producers.
Kidman gave up the role of blonde Swedish bombshell Ulla after deciding she'd have little time to prepare for the part due to other film commitments.
"The producers of The Producers graciously and amicably agreed to let her out [of her contract]," Kidman's spokesperson, Catherine Olim, told Playbill.
The actress is expected to wrap filming on Bewitched just before Christmas and then is slated to head Down Under to costar with Russell Crowe and Geoffrey Rush in the Australian fable Eucalyptus.
With The Producers set to begin shooting in February, Kidman's rep said the actress' schedule was too jam-packed for her to properly master the film's song and dance routines.
No word who will replace Kidman. Cady Huffman won a Tony originating the role of Ulla along the Great White Way.
The Producers, which is being helmed by Susan Stroman, who directed and choreographed the stage version, is expected to begin shooting Feb. 21 at Steiner Studios, a new facility recently built at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
Aside from Lane and Broderick, who are reprising their roles as rapscallion producer Max Bialystock and his hapless accountant Leo Bloom, respectively, the $45 million musical also stars Will Ferrell as crazed playwright Franz Liebkind and several cast members from the original Broadway production, including Roger Bart as Carmen Ghia and Gary Beach as flamboyant director Roger DeBris.
Kidman initially came aboard at Broderick's behest after the two worked together on The Stepford Wives. The actress, who earlier today picked up a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in Birth, quickly signed on.
The casting was inspired, adding another A-lister to the ensemble and giving Kidman another chance to show off her pipes and hoofing skills first displayed on screen in Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge!.
Kidman, who came in third in the Hollywood Reporter's annual list of highest paid actresses with a per-movie paycheck of $15 million, currently fronts advertisements for Chanel No. 5. She next turns up in movie theaters opposite Sean Penn in Sydney Pollack's political drama The Interpreter, due out in April.
As for Lane and Broderick, the duo can't get enough of each other. After shooting The Producers, the actors are planning to reunite for a Broadway revival of Neil Simon's The Odd Couple slated for next August.
