Kevin Spacey Phone-Jacked
This Usual Suspect was on the wrong end of heist in London this weekend.
Kevin Spacey wound up with a bruised noggin after having his cell phone jacked in Saturday's pre-dawn hours.
Initially, Spacey filed a report with London police claiming he had been, in the words of London's Daily Mirror, "brutally mugged" during an early-morning encounter in a local park.
But in an interview with the BBC Monday, the two-time Oscar winner changed his story. He says he came up with the mugging scenario because he was too humiliated to admit what he claims really happened: He was conned by a kid who ran off with his cell phone.
Spacey now says he was out walking his dog at 4:30 a.m. Saturday in a South London park when he was approached by an unidentified young man. Said youth gave the actor a "sob story" about needing to call his mother and asked if he could use Spacey's phone.
"It was such a good con that I actually dialed the number myself, and then when someone answered I finally handed my phone over, and this kid took off," Spacey told the BBC. "I ran after him and...tripped up over my dog and I ended up falling onto the street and hitting myself in the head."
The American Beauty star was so ticked off that he went to the police and said he was roughed by an assailant who absconded with his phone.
"I'm extremely upset. I feel like the biggest fool that's ever lived," Spacey said. "I march over to the police station and I say I got mugged and I'm thinking that they're gonna run out and find this kid a block later. Of course, they take me to the hospital, and they were very kind, and that's one of the reasons I went back on Saturday morning to the station."
London's Metropolitan Police refused to confirm the details of the incident. In a statement to the BBC, a police spokesperson said that a man in his forties with a head injury had reported a mobile phone theft at 5 a.m. on Saturday but later "withdrew the allegation. This is the end of it from our point of view."
There has been no word on whether Spacey's phone friend has been apprehended. Spacey's U.S.-based publicist could not immediately be reached for comment Monday.
But in his call to the BBC, Spacey said, "I just want to apologize to the police and any readers and anyone who picks up this story thinking it is actually true. I'm fine. It is probably good that I got bonked on the head because obviously I wasn't thinking!"
The incident took place not far from London's Old Vic Theater, where Spacey was named artistic director last year.
Spacey, who has fiercely guarded his private life, also dismissed speculation over why exactly he was out roaming a London park in the wee hours, saying it was "a perfectly normal thing to do...My doggy had to go!"
Most recently seen in the art-house drama The United States of Leland, which debuted in limited release earlier this month, Spacey has two films in the pipeline: the Bobby Darin biopic Beyond the Sea due out this fall and the indie thriller Edison, which just began production and will mark the acting debut of Justin Timberlake.
