Kelly Tapped for VMA Duty

R. Kelly won't be trapped in a closet for long.

MTV is bringing the R&B star out of the closet and onto the stage at the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards, the network announced Tuesday.

Kelly will join previously announced performers Green Day, Coldplay, the Killers, Shakira, Kanye West, Ludacris, Mariah Carey, 50 Cent and Kelly Clarkson.

The appearence will mark Kelly's first time performing on the annual awards show.

While not the Madonna-Britney-Christina three-way smooch of yore, Kelly's addition to the lineup is sure to create controversy in its own right for the traditonally boundary-pushing show. The 38-year-old "Trapped in a Closet" mastermind is still facing faces child-pornography charges stemming from a widely circulated videotape that purportedly shows him having sex with a minor.

Kelly has pleaded not guilty to all charges against him; his lawyers say it's not the singer in the video. The case is tentatively slated to go to trial in Chicago this fall.

Charges or no, what counts for MTV is that Kelly's latest, TP.3: Reloaded, has been burning up the charts since debuting at number one last month. The disc has moved more than 1 million copies, adding to the 36 million albums Kelly has sold worldwide over his career.

And the video for "Trapped in a Closet," described as an "urban opera," has emerged as one of the most talked about of the year, thanks to its unique, suspenseful multipart format. Or, as MTV put it in the press release hyping Kelly's appearance, the clip is "packed with unexpected twists and turns."

One artist no doubt less than thrilled with Kelly's late addition to the VMAs, is Gwen Stefani. Despite several nominations, the "Hollaback Girl" singer reportedly is boycotting the show after MTV execs refused to let her perform after she played the Teen Choice Awards earlier this month.

The 2005 MTV Video Music Awards will be handed out Sunday from Miami's American Airlines Arena.
