Kelly Osbourne Finds Sanctuary
Kelly Osbourne discovered the music business has its own "realities," but the teen star can still shut them up with a few big changes.
Best known from MTV's The Osbournes, Kelly made her own music waves in 2002 with her hit Madonna cover of "Papa Don't Preach" and the subsequent album Shut Up. Though Kelly made it all the way to the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, a major management shakeup at the record label caused the young singer to split with Epic Records last May. Fans need not fret, though, because Kelly already has a new label home at Sanctuary Records.
Kelly, who turns 19 next month, will have reason to celebrate as Shut Up will be re-released under its new title, Changes, on September 30.
The new Sanctuary version features five bonus tracks, including a cover of Black Sabbath's 1972 hit "Changes," which she recorded as a duet with her father Ozzy. (Of course, any rocker worth his weight in acid wash knows Ozzy also sang the original.) The other bonus tracks feature live versions of "Come Dig Me Out," "Disconnected," "Too Much of You" and "On The Run."
In a statement announcing the new album, Kelly addressed the uniqueness of the father-daughter duet. She remarks, "It really is a sweet song. It's really hard to sing in front of your dad, but I think he was actually more embarrassed than I was."
Kelly also expressed excitement about the four raw, stripped down live tracks as more accurate representations of her original intent. "I finally got to do the tracks the way I wanted them to sound," she adds.
Kelly, of course, is not the first major label artist to jump ship for Sanctuary Records. The Sanctuary roster also includes Tricky, the Cranberries, Ministry, Widespread Panic, Megadeth, Rollins, Iron Maiden, and Ozzy's old bandmates, Black Sabbath.
The label is also part of a larger international company, the Sanctuary Group, which manages Guns 'N' Roses, Jane's Addiction, Macy Gray, and others, and books live performances outside North America for over 350 artists, including Eminem, Coldplay, and Metallica.
While Kelly might not be the first to jump ship, she also might not be the last Osbourne to do so. Earlier this year, Ozzy's manager and wife Sharon said her husband was also in talks to leave Epic, though his current label status is unknown. Ozzy has been with the Sony-owned label since his 1980 solo bow, Blizzard of Ozz.
Though Changes hits stores in time for her own birthday, Kelly already has a wealth of new experiences and struggles to write about for her next album. As any fan of "The Osbournes" knows, rock's royal family was hit hard this past year with two unfortunate turns, Sharon's cancer battle and Jack's trip to rehab.
"At first I didn't know what to write about so I wrote about what I thought people were supposed to write about," reflects Kelly. "Now I've had so many s--t things happen that I have something to write about."
Regardless, Kelly couldn't be happier to see her debut instilled with new life. She adds, "I'm so f***in' thankful to be able to put the record out again. I don't think it got a fair chance the first time."
