Kellie Martin Quitting "ER"
We already knew that Julianna Margulies will hang up her scrubs at season's end, and earlier this week French movie legend Jeanne Moreau stormed off the set just one day into what was to become a recurring role. Now comes word that Kellie Martin, who's halfway through her second season as medical student Lucy Knight, will exit Chicago's County General some time in the next few months.
"Working on ER has been a fantastic experience. I have loved working with everyone on the show--the entire cast, crew and production staff," Martin said in a statement. "However, with all of the changes in the show and in the direction of Lucy's character, it seems like a good time to move on and take advantage of other opportunities."
"Working with Kellie has been a joy and we wish her well," ER executive producers John Wells and Lydia Woodward said in a statement. "She will be missed next season and we hope to have an opportunity to work with her in the future."
In addition to being unhappy with the amount of face time her character was getting, Martin might have had a more personal recent for the exit. Her lawyer husband will be heading to a New York firm in the fall.
No word from the ER camp on how Lucy Knight's exit will be handled, but Daily Variety says it will happen before the season-ending episode and it will be "electric."
Despite numerous cast defections over the years, ER continues to be TV's top-rated show. Last year, George Clooney and Gloria Reuben walked and Margulies turned down a $27 million contract extension to focus on the big screen.
And those hoping for Clooney's Dr. Doug Ross to return to say goodbye to Margulies' Nurse Carol Hathaway might be disappointed. Appearing at the Television Critics Association meetings in Pasadena, California, Wednesday to talk about an upcoming CBS project, the actor seemed to scuttle such a plot development.
"I don't know that it's necessarily smart for me to come back for one scene and scoop Julianna up and walk out," Clooney told reporters Wednesday when asked if he might appear once more. "No one's talked to me about [coming back]," Clooney said.
Meanwhile, Moreau is out and British actress Judy Parfitt is in as the mother of Alex Kingston's Dr. Elizabeth Corday. Moreau ditched the set shortly after her arrival last Friday, purportedly because the long hours, lack of limo, etc., weren't the kind of star treatment she expected.
