Kelley Practices Reality

The Practice may be down, but David E. Kelley is certainly not out of the legal game.

The tube vet has signed as a consulting producer on a new, untitled legal reality show on NBC that is reportedly to be a true-life version of his dearly departed Emmy-winning ABC series. The new show will be unscripted and follow the exploits of real lawyers engaged in actual cases.

NBC has committed to an eight-episode run of the reality version of The Practice for a midseason slot next year.

While Kelley, long a critic of reality television, will serve as a consulting producer, his reps tell E! that his production company will not produce the show.

"The nutshell version is, it represents my worst nightmare," Kelley tells Daily Variety. "In writing The Practice, I've always worried someone would come along to do this kind of storytelling but with real cases and real lawyers."

Kelley has teamed with Renegade 83 Productions (the folks behind Blind Date and The Surreal Life) for the new series.

A lawyer himself, Kelley will have an integral part in selecting the team of reality attorneys.

"It's a documentary meets a drama," he said. "We'll be creating our own law firm. We'll have our own [team] of lawyers, and they'll become our main characters."

The show also has a little Apprentice in it. Kelley said it will feature weekly axings, as well as a big-money prize for the last lawyer standing.

NBC's Jeff Gaspin tells Variety, "There will be lawyers who are dismissed each week, and there will be a winner. There will be a prize, whether it's cash or a job."

Kelley, who once mocked reality genre in an episode of The Practice, admits he's a bit uneasy going over to the dark side.

"I'm not a big fan of reality television, and I'm still not a big fan of those productions that pander to the lowest common denominator," he tells Variety, "[but] I loved the idea."

Meanwhile, Kelley will also be working on a traditional scripted spinoff of The Practice, tentatively titled The Practice: Fleet Street, for ABC starring James Spader and William Shatner.
