UPDATE!

Katt Williams Faces Gun Rap

Katt Williams

UPDATE: On July 23, 2009, prosecutors dropped all counts against Williams, saying they "can't prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt."

Williams's lawyer, Charles Ross, says the guns were registered out-of-state to the comedian's bodyguards, who still face charges.

Ross told the New York Daily News that the funnyman "was pleased the district attorney did the right thing" and that Williams looked forward to resuming his standup career, which was put on hold a week after the bust when the comic was admitted to a South Carolina medical center for a psychiatric evaluation.

Here's something Katt Williams can add to his Pimp Chronicles: gun charges.

The hardworking comic was busted—and forced to cancel a late-night TV gig—after New York police pulled him over for a driving infraction and claimed he was packing heat.

The 37-year-old Friday After Next star and 10 members of his entourage were cruising through midtown Manhattan in a two-vehicle convoy Wednesday when officers spotted missing tags on his Cadillac Escalade, says NYPD spokesman Det. Martin Speechley.

A search turned up three handguns in both the SUV and the accompanying Mercedes, leading to the arrest of Williams and two companions on three counts of criminal possession of a weapon. The funnyman spent 18 hours in jail before being released on $250,000 bond.

As a result, Williams missed his scheduled appearance on NBC's Late Night With Conan O'Brien. However, Williams did get out in time to perform his stand-up act Thursday night at Carnegie Hall, telling the sold-out crowd, "I'm not moving at my usual pace...I just got out of jail 35 minutes ago."

Wiliams's lawyer, Charles Ross, denied the charges against his client.

"Mr. Williams has entered a not guilty plea," the legal eagle told E! Online. "We intend to vigorously defend against these charges in court. The district attorney has no case. They cannot possibly prove he possessed these weapons."
