Kate Winslet Weds

This much we know: Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes are officially newlyweds.

But exactly how newly, we're not quite sure.

In a brief statement Monday, the actress' publicist, Robert Garlock, confirmed that the two have swapped vows, but those looking for the date of the nuptials, the make of her dress or an A-list-studded reception list are going to be sorely disappointed.

"Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes were married in late May in a small ceremony while on vacation in the West Indies," the rep announced. "Present were Winslet's daughter Mia and three close friends."

We can fill in some details. It's the second marriage for Winslet, whose first matrimonial endeavor, to director Jim Threapleton, made like the Titanic and sunk after just three years. Mendes, an Oscar earner for directing American Beauty, is a first-time groom. While there's no word on a honeymoon, the couple have reportedly been in the midst of a months-long vacation around the world.

Winslet, 27, and Mendes, 37, publicly came out as a couple in the fall of 2001, just months after she and Threapleton split and a little more than a year after Winslet gave birth to Mia. In her court petition, Winslet cited Threapleton's alleged "unreasonable behavior" as the reason for the divorce, which became official in December 2001.

Winslet and her new beau insisted that they didn't hook up until after she and Threapleton separated. Before Winslet, Mendes had been linked with actresses Rachel Weisz, Calista Flockhart and Jane Horrocks.

The couple, a favorite of Britain's celebrity-mad tabloids, have since shacked up at a swanky 22-acre 17th-century address.

But they haven't been spending too much time there.

Winslet, a three-time Oscar nominee (Best Actress for Titanic and Supporting Actress for Sense and Sensibility and Iris) has been busy making movies. She recently starred with Kevin Spacey in The Life of David Gale and will soon be voicing a part in the BBC's leonine CGI movie Pride. She has also finished shooting on J.M. Barrie's Neverland and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and is scheduled to begin work later this year on the Coen brother-produced, John Turturro-helmed musical Romance & Cigarettes, opposite James Gandolfini, Susan Sarandon and Christopher Walken. (Winslet has sung before, lending her pipes to an animated version of A Christmas Carol, which spawned a single called "What If?")

After breaking into Hollywood in a big way with American Beauty, followed by last year's Road to Perdition, hubby Mendes is back working the stage, serving as director of the Broadway revival of Gypsy, starring Bernadette Peters. He also helmed London productions of Uncle Vanya and Twelfth Night, which earned him an unprecedented three Olivier Awards (Britain's highest theatrical honor) earlier this year.

Upon accepting his prize, Mendes said: "I want to say thank you to my partner Kate, because these are two plays about love and it helps when you direct them to have some personal experience."
