Kate Hudson's Skeleton Suit
Kate Hudson has a bone to pick with the tabloids.
The Oscar-nominated actress ordered her U.K.-based lawyers on Monday to take legal action against five publications that printed photographs of her that she says falsely imply she has an eating disorder.
Hudson, last seen onscreen in the supernatural thriller The Skeleton Key, is peeved over pictures and accompanying text that she claims have the potential to harm her career because filmmakers may not want to hire someone perceived as having a health problem.
"[The reports] suggested that she had an eating disorder that was so grave and serious that she was wasting away, to the extreme concern of her mother and family," her lawyers at the London law firm Schillings said in a statement.
The daughter of Goldie Hawn is specifically targeting the National Enquirer for an article the publication ran last month titled "Goldie tells Kate: Eat Something! And She Listens!" Also on the hit list are the British tabloids Heat, Daily Mail UK, Star and Closer, all of which published photos of what appeared to be a dangerously thin Hudson, even though her "weight and diet was of a healthy nature" then and now, her lawyers assert.
"Ms. Hudson will argue in the courts that the images in question gave a seriously false and misleading impression as to her true physical condition, in that she was portrayed as being dangerously thin with an eating disorder," the statement continues.
Schillings, the go-to London law firm for celebrities battling the tabloids (the client list includes Cameron Diaz, Justin Timberlake and Naomi Campbell), says the lawsuit will examine how the photos were taken, sold and eventually published by the papers. Unless the sides reach a settlement, the case is expected to be tried in London's High Court sometime next year.
The National Enquirer declined to comment, citing pending litigation. A rep for Emap, which owns both Star and Closer magazines, told the BBC that it had received a legal notice from Schillings and planned to respond "in due course."
Prior to making Skeleton Key, Hudson, 26, had been on a hiatus from acting to play mommy to 21-month-old Ryder Russell Robinson, her first child with husband and Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson. But Hudson's back at work now. The actress, who earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination for 2000's Almost Famous, is currently shooting the comedy You, Me and Dupree, costarring Owen Wilson and Michael Douglas, and is due to film the drama Sleight of Mind, in which she plays a young woman who befriends a magician suffering from Alzheimer's disease.
