Justin's Pipes Need Peace, Shows Scrapped
What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Including Justin Timberlake's voice.
Citing "vocal strain" endured during the MTV Video Music Awards weekend festivities in Sin City, Timberlake has postponed two dates on his globetrotting FutureSex/LoveShows tour this week.
Despite the rather suspect timing of the cancellations, coming on the heels of the party-happy sojourn on the Strip, TImberlake's rep insists it was the cumulative effect of a "rigorous" concert schedule capped by a series of VMA performances that caused the entertainer to scuttle shows in Sacramento and San Jose, California.
"The shows were rescheduled following a doctor mandated several day vocal rest prescribed to the artist to repair vocal strain inflicted during his MTV VMA performance and months of rigorous touring," read a statement from tour promoter AEG Live on JustinTimberlake.com.
The Sacramento show, originally scheduled for Monday, will now take place Sept. 25 and serve as the tour closer; the San Jose stop, which had been set for Wednesday, will now go down on Sept. 23. Tickets for the postponed shows will be honored for the rescheduled dates.
For his part, Timberlake planted the seeds of potential disappointment backstage at the VMAs, when he told reporters he was feeling ill.
Still, Timberlake managed to serve as host of one of MTV's VIP party suites along with Timbaland. The duo enlisted the help of several guests, T.I. and 50 Cent among them, to perform for a select group of Sin City's finest at the Palms Hotel Casino suite while the ceremony continued beneath them.
Timberlake and Timbaland, accompanied by Nelly Furtado, also made it down to the main stage to close out the show.
There's no word yet on whether Timberlake's bum pipes will preclude him from attending—and perhaps even indulging in a gift-wrapped performance—at the Primetime Emmy Awards this Sunday.
Timberlake was busy giving a concert in Washington last Saturday when he and Andy Samberg were awarded the trophy for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics at the Creative Arts Emmy for their SNL ditty, "Dick in a Box."
There's been speculation that producers are trying to enlist Timberlake and Samberg to at least appear, if not perform, at Sunday's ceremony.
For his part, Samberg said he'd be happy to give an encore, but that he and Timberlake hadn't yet been asked by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
Timberlake, meanwhile, will at least be in the vicinity. He is scheduled to give a concert later Sunday night at L.A.'s Staple Center, just a few blocks away from Emmy headquarters at the Shrine Auditorium.
Of course, if he and Samberg do manage to take the stage with their respective boxes, the FCC will be certainly watching.
Timberlake infamously triggered Janet Jackson's Super Bowl "wardrobe malfunction" in 2004, an incident that refuses to go away.
On Tuesday, as Timberlake rested his voice, lawyers for CBS appeared in a courtroom in Philadelphia to ask a federal appeals court to overturn the FCC's record $550,000 fine over the momentary boob reveal.
