Just Call Him Inaction Jackson
Look out, here comes the spider-man. Or maybe not.
Blaming a really bad boo-boo caused by the bite of a rogue arachnid, Michael Jackson was AWOL from a California court Thursday.
The singer was supposed to be on hand for his sixth and final day of testimony in a breach-of-contract battle that accuses him of skipping out on two millennium concerts. It's not immediately clear when he'll be back on the stand.
Though noticeably hobbled (he was unable to wear a shoe on his swollen left foot and was maneuvering via crutches), Jackson managed to take the stand on Tuesday and Wednesday and was well enough to make goofy faces at the court cameraman.
"It is a spider bite. It is real bad. If I showed it to you, you'd be shocked," he explained to reporters Tuesday. "It hurts very much right now as I speak." He then said the bite was not caused by one of his many pet tarantulas.
Jacko's being sued by his longtime promoter, Marcel Avram, who claims the pop singer bailed on international dateline-straddling concerts in Sydney and Honolulu both taking place on New Year's Eve 1999. Avram's looking to recoup $21 million in damages.
After a brief behind-the-scenes powwow with lawyers for both sides on Thursday, Superior Court Judge Zel Canter agreed to let an independent physician examine Jackson's bad wheel and figure out when the singer can moonwalk back to court. The move was prompted by Avram's lawyer, Louis "Skip" Miller, who claims Jackson was stalling.
"This is the third time in the middle of my [questioning] that I was unable to continue because Jackson was late or did not shown up. What a coincidence," Miller told reporters outside the Santa Maria courthouse.
Thursday marked the third time Jackson failed to show in court. Last month, he brought things to a standstill because he didn't want any more up-close and personal pictures snapped by the pool photographer. The day before, images of Jacko's surgically morphed mug were furiously emailed across the Internet.
Jackson, 44, also missed two weeks to go to Germany to pick up an award (and wave his baby over a balcony).
During his testimony, Jackson has been hammered on the details of the nixed concerts. "That's administrative work," he said in court Wednesday. "That's not what I do. I'm the entertainer."
He then compared himself to a certain friend of Mickey. "Walt Disney was creative but not good with business. His brother Roy handled the books.
"Walt Disney was a very creative man and a visionary. He loved creating family-oriented entertainment and so do I. I feel that was a gift, and I have that gift also. I'm very honored to have been chosen."
