Julia Taking a Timeout
With twins on the way, the Pretty Woman is looking forward to a pretty long vacation.
Julia Roberts tells Newsweek that she plans to take time off from her big-screen career to prepare for impending motherhood this winter.
"It's a whole new life!" the 36-year-old says in the Aug. 30 issue. "I'm not planning anything. I can't imagine how big I'm going to get in the next three months, but hell, you just kind of play it as it comes, I'm allowed to do that, aren't I?"
No word how long the hiatus will last. Roberts, who announced she was expecting in June, has not publicly divulged her due date, but the twins--said to be a boy and a girl--are reportedly slated to make their grand entrance around Christmas.
Before going on diaper duty, however, the Oscar winner will be working to deliver her other two babies: Closer and Ocean's Twelve.
Both of the high-profile flicks are due for release this year. First up is Closer, an intense relationship drama directed by Mike Nichols and costarring Jude Law, Natalie Portman and Clive Owen that hits theaters Dec. 3. A week later comes Ocean's Twelve, Steven Soderbergh's sequel to the 2001 crime caper hit Ocean's Eleven and also starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Ironically, Roberts got the Closer gig after Nichols' first choice, Cate Blanchett, dropped out after becoming pregnant.
News of Roberts' self-imposed baby break comes amid some cutting criticism from ex-boyfriend Benjamin Bratt, who, according to World Entertainment News Network, insinuated that Roberts "unbearable ego" led to the demise of their nearly four-year relationship in 2001.
"With Julia I saw up close what fame really does to a person," the 40-year-old Catwoman star was quoted as saying. "It sounds great but it comes with a terrible price. Getting too close to the light is a dangerous thing. But I needed to go through that to appreciate what I have now."
Following his split with Roberts, Bratt married former Bond girl Talisa Soto in 2002.
"My wife is the most beautiful actress in the world," he said. "But what makes her special is that she's beautiful on the inside too. She doesn't have an unbearable ego."
As for Roberts, she seems to be doing just fine with her hubby, cinematographer Danny Moder, whom she married in July 2002.
The couple reportedly purchased a palatial multimillion-dollar spread in Malibu to raise the twins away from the prying eyes of the paparazzi--and the perfect place for a long vacation.
