Julia Finds Happiness

For Julia Roberts, apparently happiness means keeping a busy work schedule.

The Pretty Woman has signed on to headline Happiness Sold Separately, Fox Searchlight's feature adaptation of Lolly Winston's heartbreaking novel about a marriage gone bad.

In the drama, the 39-year-old Roberts will play an emotionally wrought suburban housewife who, after failing to conceive a child, discovers her husband is having an affair with his personal trainer.

The Oscar winner will coproduce the film through her Red Om production banner along with Suzanne and Jennifer Todd of Team Todd and Revolution Studios' Joe Roth and Valeska Ramet. Scott Coffey (Ellie Parker) has been hired to adapt the novel and direct.

"I couldn't get Julia out of my head when I was reading Lolly's book. Elinor is such a strong, complicated woman, and bringing her to the screen required Julia's integrity, empathy, humor and legs," the helmer, who costarred with Roberts in the 1988 movie Satisfaction, told Variety.

After taking time off in 2004 and 2005 to have twins with cinematographer husband Danny Moder, Roberts has jumped back in to acting work. She voiced roles for Warner Bros. summer 'toon The Ant Bully and the title character in Paramount's updated Charlotte's Web, due out this Friday, and made her Broadway debut in April in the critically maligned play Three Days of Rain.

She is currently shooting the political drama Charlie Wilson's War with Tom Hanks and Philip Seymour Hoffman and helmed by her Closer director Mike Nichols. Roberts has also been tapped to appear in Nip/Tuck creator Ryan Murphy's upcoming film, Eat, Pray, Love.

Last month, Roberts' production company acquired the rights to The Friday Night Knitting Club, an upcoming novel by Kate Jacobs about a single mom who runs a Manhattan knitting shop cum neighborhood gathering spot. Roberts is considering starring in the film for Universal.

Red Ohm is also teaming up with Walden Media and Goldsmith-Thomas Productions to produce a series of films inspired by the enduringly popular American Girls dolls, having previously produced a trio of made-for-TV movies based on the characters in 2004.

Aside from keeping her busy, the slate of projects are likely to result in a bonus side effect—restoring Roberts to the title of Hollywood's highest paid female star, a position she abdicated to Nicole Kidman during her maternity leave.
