Judge Praises Dirty, Tardy Doherty

It seems Pete Doherty only has room for improvement.

The Babyshambles frontman showed up 30 minutes late to a progress report hearing in London Wednesday, where he indicated that he was still using drugs.

But rather than criticizing his tardy arrival and failure to stay clean, the judge praised the troubled rocker for showing up at all.

"There's no obligation for you to turn up to the reviews," Judge Jane McIvor said. "The fact you've turned up shows cooperation—more than cooperation—and there is no risk of you breaching this order."

Doherty, who has faced countless legal problems due to his various addictions, explained that his friends had issued an ultimatum with regard to his drug use.

"The people I'm closest to have had enough. They've said it's drugs or them," he said.

"A lot has changed in the past week," he added.

Though Doherty didn't elaborate on what those changes were, a pair of shows he played last week may hold some clues.

During a solo performance at London's Hackney Empire on Apr. 11, he referred to on-again flame Kate Moss as his fiancée and later brought the supermodel onstage.

"I'd like to dedicate this song to my beautiful fiancée," he said, before launching into "What Katie Did," from the Libertine's second album.

Moss then took the stage to lend backing vocals to the Babyshambles song "La Belle et La Bête," according to published reports.

The couple previously denied reports that they wed in Thailand over New Year's, but have hinted that they plan to marry at some point.

The following night, Doherty was joined onstage by his former Libertines band mate Carl Barat for a 13-song set, marking the first time the duo had performed together publicly since the band broke up in 2004.

The surprise reunion sparked fans' hopes for a Libertines reconciliation, but Barat's rep was quick to deny that the band was considering getting back together.

"They just got together for the night. There are no plans for anything more than that," the rep told the BBC.

On the other hand, Doherty has lots of plans with regard to Babyshambles. The band signed a longterm record contract with Parlophone in January, and a sophomore album is expected out later this year.

Last month, Babyshambles announced dates for an upcoming U.K. arena tour, launching in November. The band is also slated to play the Scottish music festival T in the Park in July and the 2007 V Festival in August.

That is, of course, assuming Doherty can get clean and stay that way. Last October, he called off a scheduled tour in an attempt to stay focused on his recovery after a stint in rehab.

Though he indicated Wednesday that he was still using drugs, Doherty said he was determined to stop.

"I'm quite keen to show a negative test as soon as possible really," he told the judge.

It's a familiar refrain, but maybe this time Doherty will actually change his tune.
