Joplin Biopic Thinks Pink

Pink's about to get this production started.

The singer, real name Alecia Moore, has been cast as Janis Joplin in an indie biopic slated for a summer start date, reports Variety.

That puts her Joplin project ahead of the Renée Zellweger vehicle Piece of My Heart--reportedly a labor of love for the Texan thesp who idolized the rock legend.

Pink's version also has the approval of Joplin's family and exclusive publishing rights to standards such as "Move Over," "Mercedes Benz" and "Down on Me."

It would be the first acting gig for Pink--who's long since abandoned the cotton candy-colored look--if you ignore her theatrical efforts in music videos.

But her amateur status apparently doesn't interfere with her acting chops, according to the movie's director Penelope Spheeris.

"After trying to make a picture on Janis' life for 15 years, I'd call Alecia's screen test the most gratifying moment in my film career," said Spheeris. "She is the perfect age to play Janis from when she first came to California at 19 to when she died at 27."

Pink's pipes are also praised for capturing Joplin's gravelly vocal style. In fact, the "Missundaztood" singer is so convincing, she'll sing the tunes live while shooting. There's also a soundtrack deal in the works.

Pink is currently on tour in Europe through May though Spheeris insists the pop singer has set aside plenty of rehearsal time for her big-screen debut.
