Jon Stewart Dwells on Important Things
The Daily Show has turned out to be the comedic gift that keeps on giving.
Following in the illustrious footsteps of Stephen Colbert, Demetri Martin, the satirical newscast's resident trends correspondent, is striking out to make his own way on Comedy Central.
Jon Stewart's Busboy Productions will be offering up Important Things with Demetri Martin late next year, a variety/sketch-comedy show featuring the 34-year-old New Yorker's stream-of-consciousness musings on life. Focusing on one weighty topic per episode, subjects will range from everyday concerns to the more existential mysteries of our existence to the completely random, i.e. "Apples."
"This announcement seems very important," Martin said in a statement Wednesday. "I'm very excited to be at Comedy Central and looking forward to making one of the top shows of all time—ever. Also, I need to clean my apartment and thank Jon Stewart."
But the home of The Daily Show, The Colbert Report and Mind of Mencia is really just hoping for another funny hit show. Like on Mencia, and Chappelle's Show before it, Important Things will alternate between the host's stand-up comedy and taped sketches.
"Demetri Martin is truly an original," said Lauren Corrao, executive VP of original programming and development at Comedy Central. "He's the only guy that can take you on a hilarious journey on the importance of apples for 30 minutes and make you laugh and make you think.
"We're huge fans of Demetri and Busboy, and are extremely excited about taking the next step with them."
Important Things is Comedy Central's second pickup from Stewart's production shingle, the first having been The Colbert Report. Busboy, with Stewart and Martin serving as executive producers, will get things rolling with anywhere from 6 to 10 episodes.
"When we were in the throes of postproduction, Jon went into the office and editing room and worked with Demetri on the final cuts," Corrao told the Hollywood Reporter. "He's been very involved."
Martin—whose own hourlong stand-up special, Demetri Martin. Person, premiered in January on Comedy Central—won the Perrier Comedy Award at the 2003 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He also shared in a Writers Guild of America award win for comedy/variety series when he was a member of the Late Night with Conan O'Brien team in 2005.
The Yale grad also played a "keytar" player named Demetri on the season finale of HBO's Flight of the Conchords, and he appears in two upcoming films, the ensemble comedy Kids in America, and the washed-up-musician-making-a-comeback comedy The Rocker, starring Rainn Wilson.
