One of the most unlikely showbiz feuds in years is showing no sign of reaching a détente.
Jon Hamm and his Mad Men cohorts turned up on the Today show this morning and, inevitably, the conversation turned to his ongoing and unlikely war of words with Kim Kardashian.
Turns out Don Draper's alter ego is just as steadfast in his opinion as the TV icon he portrays.
When told by Matt Lauer that the E! reality star at the receiving end of his pop culture critical salvo not only heard his remarks that "stupidity is being celebrated" and that "being a f--king idiot is a valuable commodity," but returned fire, calling his comments "careless," he was given the chance to, once again, respond.
Which he did. By utterly holding his ground.
"I don't think they were careless; I think they were accurate," he said of the comments he made to Elle UK earlier this month.
"It's a part of our culture that I certainly don't identify with, and I don't really understand the appeal of it other than in a sort of car crash sensibility, and it's not something that I partake in or enjoy, but it is what it is, and here we are."
Not content to leave it at that, Lauer encouraged Hamm's Mad Men costars to weigh in, egging them on by asking, "Anybody else want to jump in the pool? The water's beautiful."
Yes, as it happens: Vincent Kartheiser, aka Pete Campbell.
"I agree," he said. "He said it very eloquently. I agree with everything he said. I think our society enjoys to turn on the television and see someone who's maybe awful and they can say, 'Maybe I'm not as terrible as that person.' "
In the end, Hamm did attempt to give a more PC answer, echoing his sentiments to E! News last week that the proffering of his personal opinion was not meant to be a personal attack on either Kim or, lest we forget the other recipient of his slam, Paris Hilton.
"There's a lot of channels on the dial, and those channels need to be filled up with things, and, listen, it's different strokes for different folks."
Somehow we don't think we've heard the last of this. Particularly since Jon is in the middle of making the media rounds for Mad Men's fifth season and can't seem to shake the question, again getting asked about it by Anderson Cooper in an interview airing this Friday.
"It gets rementioned and rerementioned on further television shows and here we are," he told Cooper when asked about the viral nature of his comments. When the host pointed out that his initial comments weren't even directed at Kardashian herself, rather the wider notion of reality TV in general, Hamm agreed that his original point had gotten lost in the headlines.
"Oh sure, but that point is so long since gone. It's amazing i'm in a Twitter feud, I don't have a Twitter account and I'm not a big fan of feuding, so it's a very strange place to be."
But despite his comments, that's not to say he's opposed to all reality.
"I like the shows where they actually make something. So if it's food or clothing or something like that, I like when things actually get created because it's fun and interesting to watch...or races. I likes races, too, but it's fun when they actually do something."
