J.Lo Still Not Preggers
Jesse McCartney's big mouth has landed him right where he doesn't want to be.
The 19-year-old pop star apparently spoke too soon last week, when, during an interview with an Atlanta radio station, he appeared to break the news that Jennifer Lopez was pregnant.
The topic arose after McCartney mentioned that his longtime girlfriend, Katie Cassidy, had recently landed a role in the upcoming adaptation of Dallas, leading the deejay to inquire if McCartney had any inside scoop about the reason for J.Lo's sudden exit from the project.
"She's pregnant," McCartney replied casually. "That's why she's not on it."
Or maybe not. In the ensuing baby buzz, Lopez's rep flatly denied the rumor, stating that the multihyphenated diva was in fact "100 percent not pregnant."
A chastened McCartney subsequently issued a rebuttal of his comment through his record label.
"I have no first hand knowledge whether Jennifer Lopez is pregnant or not. I thought I had read it somewhere. I apologize," he said.
To be fair, McCartney's misinformation could have come from any number of sources.
Rumors that Lopez and husband Marc Anthony might soon be parents have been springing up on an almost monthly basis since their June 2004 wedding, and Lopez has made no secret of her desire to reproduce.
"Honestly, I would do anything to get pregnant. Whatever it takes, I'll do it. I want to be a mother more than anything," she told London's Sunday Mail in January 2005.
One month later, citing illness, she backed out of a film promotion and called off the European leg of her tour, igniting rumors that she and Anthony had successfully conceived. However, the singer denied that she was expecting, telling People magazine she was "not on a timetable," but that "one healthy baby would be enough for me."
In March 2005, Lopez further quelled pregnancy rumors by baring her belly during a performance on the Today show.
"I'm looking at the belly, and you don't look pregnant right now," Matt Lauer commented.
"I think I've been pregnant about 17 times," Lopez replied sarcastically.
In May 2005, while promoting Monster-in-Law, Lopez again made reference to the constant speculation over the contents of her womb.
"I'm pregnant all the time now, if you believe what you read. I just live with all the rumors," she told the Chicago Sun-Times.
In January 2006, word of Lopez's impending motherhood spread yet again after she and Anthony were spotted loading up on baby gear at various trendy Los Angeles infant stores. Once again, her rep spoke up to assure the world that, once again, Lopez was not pregnant.
The gossip mill started up again in May 2006, when widely reported signs such as Lopez's fuller appearance in both her face and her belly and her gray roots were cited as evidence that she was indeed expecting. Yet again, her camp was ready with the denial.
Which brings us up to the present, where both Lopez's abrupt departure from the Dallas project and McCartney's comment have fueled the flames of reproduction rumors only to be shut down yet again.
Stay tuned for next month's inevitable Bumpwatch reports, be they true or false.
