J.Lo Gets in Gere for "Dance"
Just call her J.Lo Tango.
Jennifer Lopez may have found the perfect partner in Ben Affleck, but now she's ready to strut her stuff on screen for Richard Gere.
The singer-actress-perfume purveyor and the Chicago star are waltzing into Miramax Films' romantic comedy Shall We Dance?
Based on the 1996 Japanese romantic comedy by Masayuki Suo, the sentimental flick is being written by Audrey Wells and will be helmed by Serendipidty's Peter Chelsom.
In it, Lopez will play a beautiful young ballroom dance instructor who agrees to take on a depressed middle-aged married guy as her student, only to find out he's signed up just to impress her. Of course, things get hot and heavy faster than you can say dirty dancing.
Gere tapped in to his inner hoofer by hamming it up as suave shady lawyer Billy Flynn in Chicago, also released by Miramax and the frontrunner going into this month's Academy Awards.
Lopez will get to show off her her Fly Girl pedigree in Dance. It'll also be her latest romantic comedy, following such lighthearted fare as last December's Maid in Manhattan, 2001's The Wedding Planner and 1998's Out of Sight.
The project also marks the third film she's agreed to do for Harvey Weinstein & Co. She's currently filming director Lasse Halstrom's new drama Unfinished Life, costarring Robert Redford, and has Kevin Smith's Jersey Girl with Affleck already in the can.
Before that film hits theaters, however, Lopez and soon-to-be hubby number three Affleck will first turn up the heat in writer-director Martin Brest's upcoming gangster dramedy Tough Love (formerly Gigli), due out this summer.
Although it's been years since her In Living Color gig, Lopez won't have to practice her dance moves. She's among the nominees for the second annual American Dance Music Awards, which will be doled out on March 19 in Miami.
Lopez and Gere are scheduled to foxtrot their way in front of the cameras for Shall We Dance? sometime in June for a 2004 release.
