Jim Carrey: Rich Man, "Poor" Kid

Dear Dad, send more money.

That's the plea from Jim Carrey's ex Melissa Carrey on behalf of their deprived daughter Jane. (Carrey has another ex in his past, second wife Lauren Holly.)

Apparently, Carrey's Hollywood success hasn't extended to the child he had with Melissa in 1987. Mother and daughter are forced to make do on a mere $10,000 a month and mom's gone to Los Angeles Superior Court to change all that.

When the Canuck comic and the former Mrs. Carrey divorced in 1995 (Melissa still uses his last name--handy for those hard-to-get restaurant reservations), young Jane was just seven years old and apparently less expensive to care for. At the time, Carrey agreed to pay $10,000 a month in child support plus medical expenses and was ordered to include a $1 million payout to Jane in his will.

That was then.

Now, Melissa charges that she can no longer accommodate Jane in the "prestigious lifestyle" to which the teen is accustomed when spending time with her multimillionaire dad and filed a declaration to substantially increase Carrey's child support payments on January 30.

According to court documents published on the Smoking Gun Website, Carrey has taken Jane on first-class vacations to Africa and the Caribbean, but it's his enviable bling bling that's got Melissa really mad, including two houses, one in Brentwood and one in Malibu (purchased fully furnished), a jet valued at $25 million, five cars and a full staff, including masseuse, personal trainer, chauffeur, housekeeper, butler, gardeners and personal chef.

Meanwhile, Jane lives sans swimming pool, tennis court, gym or personal trainer and flies coach when not traveling with her famous father. The Hollywood teen is also forced to get her massages at--the horror, the horror--a local spa. Mom instead wants her daughter to "enjoy a lifestyle that is commensurate to that of her father," who earned $44.5 million in 2000 (yeah, but did she take into account 2001's The Majestic?).

It all makes sense, says Melissa, if you consider Jane spends 90 percent of her time with her mother in their humble Hollywood home. In addition, Carrey's accused of being a deadbeat dad who constantly cancels plans at the last minute and missed Jane's musical performance at her school's holiday show, all of which have "discouraged and depressed" the teen.

Jane hasn't put forth her own request for an allowance increase since Carrey once told her not to ask for cash because "he wanted her to love him for who he is, not for his money," say court documents. Melissa says her daughter took the message to heart, mooching money off friends during a trip to Disneyland rather than asking her father for money. Now, mom says, the madness has to stop.

A hearing is scheduled for April 21 to review the support request.

Maybe Carrey's former missus has been reading the trades? The actor's elastic mug will appear steadily at the multiplex over the next two years, starting with next month's comedy Bruce Almighty, costarring Morgan Freeman as God and Jennifer Aniston as Carrey's girlfriend. Production has just started on Carrey's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind opposite Kate Winslet, slated to be in theaters November 14.

Up next, Carrey will play the evil Count Olaf in the kid's book adaptation of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, due to start shooting this summer for a December 2004 release. Then there's a comic strip adaptation of The Hedge, due in 2005, to which Carrey lends his voice as a conniving critter. Finally, there's a proposed collaboration with Steven Spielberg on a remake of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

Ka-ching!
