Jim Bakker Sued by His Flock

Ah, give us that old-time, '80s-style religion, when Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker bilked millions of dollars out of believers in their Praise the Lord television ministry and used the funds to support a lavish lifestyle for themselves and their dogs (who had an air-conditioned house of their own).

Those days are back again--at least a slice of them--in a North Carolina courtroom. Thousands who bought "Lifetime Partnerships" in the Bakkers' PTL Heritage USA real estate complex are suing Jim Bakker in a trial that began Monday. They want a collective refund of more than $100 million, claiming their investments never made a profit. The partnerships included time-shares in lodging units which the Bakers oversold. Attorneys have agreed not to discuss details of the case with reporters.

To win the case, however, the former PTL members will have to convince a jury that Jim Bakker did indeed sell the partnerships as an investment with an expectation of profit. His attorneys argue that the ministry was merely selling memberships.

Jim Bakker was convicted in 1989 and served five years of an eight-year sentence for the Heritage USA fraud. The civil suit went to trial on Monday.

Where are they now?

Tammy Faye divorced Jim in 1992 and later married a building contractor--who was convicted of bankruptcy fraud last March in Wichita, Kansas.

Jessica Hahn, the New York church secretary whose adulterous fling with Jim brought the PTL ministry down, posed nude for Playboy and in 1993 was the star of Playboy's best-selling video. She later pursued an acting career, but her financial manager says, "She's not really doing anything now."

Jim Bakker lives near Asheville, North Carolina, preaches sporadically and is reportedly writing a book titled I Was Wrong.
