Jessica Simpson Keeps Quiet

What was supposed to be A Public Affair has ended up being pretty hush-hush.

Jessica Simpson, who had a full schedule of appearances lined up to promote her new album, A Public Affair, is sidelined with a strained vocal cord and has been ordered not to sing, her publicist confirmed Monday.

Her physician warned the 26-year-old songstress not to use it or else face losing it, stating Simpson should refrain from speaking while giving her pipes time to rest. The setback forced Simpson to cancel a date with The Late Show with David Letterman and a Friday performance on the Today show is now up in the air. Instead, the In This Skin singer flew to New York a day earlier than planned and met with a voice specialist.

"She's on total vocal rest, and some of her appearances have been delayed," said publicist Rob Shuter. "She can talk, she can croak out a few sentences. She sounds a little off, but, you know, she can't sing."

Shuter described Simpson's problem as either a strained or bruised vocal cord.

Simpson did manage to drop by Total Request Live Tuesday, where she hoarsely introduced music videos.

A friend of the Teen Choice Award winner for Movie Breakout told In Touch that Simpson, who has been communicating with people via notepad and pen, was feeling physically okay but was bummed about the bad timing.

A Public Affair, Simpson's first album on Epic Records since making the switch from Columbia--as well as her first album as a divorcée--comes out on Tuesday. A half-hour MTV special, Jessica Simpson: A Public Affair, airs Sept. 4. The (luckily) pretaped show promises a "very intimate performance of songs from her new album" and "an exclusive inside look at Jessica's life and music."

MTV has long been a good friend to its onetime Newlywed. The video for the dance-happy eponymous first single from A Public Affair featuring Eva Longoria, Christina Applegate, Christina Milian, Maria Menounos, Andy Dick and Ryan Seacrest, directed by Brett Ratner, debuted on MTV's TRL July 19.
