Jerry Lewis Kicks Steroids

Rubber-faced funnyman Jerry Lewis is 50 pounds lighter and in fighting form.

But diet mavens beware: The weight loss can't be chalked up to the latest waistline regime.

Instead, Lewis lost the pounds after weaning himself off prednisone, a steroid drug he had been taking since 2001 for pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic lung ailment.

The comedian was discharged from an undisclosed Las Vegas hospital January 16 after a three-month stay to kick the habit and is looking forward to making audiences laugh again.

"He's feeling great," said rep Candi Cazau. "He looks like Jerry Lewis."

The entertainer's face had become distorted as a side-effect of the steroids--at one point, Lewis' weight ballooned to 242 pounds.

Throughout, he still managed to host his annual Labor Day telethon to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, albeit in a dimished role.

Then last year, doctors encouraged him to stop taking prednisone after his lung condition showed marked improvement. However, Lewis' attempts to get off the steroid were hampered by his work schedule.

As a result, he checked himself into the Sin City hospital's rehab center last October for help with the withdrawal process.

It was the latest in a string of health problems that have plagued Lewis since the 1960s, including a back injury that led to a lengthy addiction to prescription painkillers, a bout of viral meningitis and an unexplained collapse two years ago backstage at a theater in London.

Now on a new diet and exercise routine, the erstwhile Nutty Professor still hopes to lose 20 pounds. He also plans to get back to the Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas where he had been a regular performer three years ago before declining health affected his ability to perform.

But fans may have to wait to catch the act--Lewis is expected to reserve the first show for family, friends and show-business colleagues, according to his rep.
