Jerry Lewis Gets Back to Work

Jerry Lewis is back--and so is his back.

The legendary comedian returned home from an overnight stay in the hospital Tuesday, after doctors checked on an electronic device implanted to ease chronic back pain. With the battery-powered gadget in working order, the 76-year-old entertainer is now planning to get back on stage in Las Vegas later this year.

"He's fine," Candi Cazau, a spokeswoman for the Orleans Hotel & Casino where Lewis has a long-term performance contract, tells the Associated Press. "His whole goal is to be pain-free and medication-free."

This week's visit to a Las Vegas hospital was described as a "routine follow-up," after the funnyguy underwent surgery April 8 in Houston, where doctors installed the Synergy Neurostimulation System. Located in his lower abdomen, the device emits pulses through wires connected to his spinal cord. Using a handheld control, Lewis can adjust the amount of pulses transmitted and block his chronic back pain.

"And I can open my garage door," Lewis told the Las Vegas Sun after his operation.

Lewis told the newspaper he felt "reborn" after surgery to relieve the back pain, which he's endured after a career full of pratfalls. The pain only intensified last year after he fell ill with pneumonia, leading him to cancel Las Vegas appearances at the Orleans Hotel and Casino and cut back his commitment to his annual Labor Day Telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Lewis had endured the chronic pain to avoid taking pills, after a more than decade-long addiction to pain killers in the 1960s and early '70s.

Following his surgery Lewis said he planned to hit the road in July with shows in Las Vegas, New York, Paris and Berlin. Now, Orleans spokeswoman Cazau says Lewis is aiming to return to his regular appearances at the casino in October.

Meantime, Lewis also is working on a memoir about his career with late partner Dean Martin, and he'll once again return to work promoting his Labor Day Telethon in June.
