"Jeopardy!" Jennings Makes TV History

Category: Game show record holders. Answer: Ken Jennings. Question: Who holds the record for the most money won on a game show?

Jeopardy! whiz KenJen, as he's fondly known, has continued his winning streak and shattered the record for game show earnings on the episode that aired Wednesday.

Jennings amassed $45,099 in winnings, bringing his Jeopardy! paycheck up to a whopping $2,197,000 and surpassing the previous record of $2,180,000 set by Kevin Olmstead on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? in 2001.

Proving that he is indeed the quiz show king, Jennings slam-dunked the Final Jeopardy! category of "Royalty," providing the correct response to "This king was the great-grandfather of France's King Louis XV."

Jennings' reply? "Who is Louis XIV?" (Duh.)

The response earned Jennings another $7,499 and a place in the record books.

The 30-year-old software engineer from Salt Lake City began his journey to celebrity geekdom on June 2. He broke the record for longest game show winning streak in the Jeopardy! episode that aired Sept. 15 and to date has logged 66 consecutive wins.

Jennings' fortunes are the result of a relatively recent change in Jeopardy! policy that lifted a limit on how many consecutive games a contestant could win, which was previously set at five.

Though it has not been officially confirmed, TV Week magazine reported in September that Jennings finally loses after his 75th Jeopardy! episode, which would make the defeat of the KenJen dynasty a scant nine episodes away.

In the meantime, it's apparently not the big bucks that keep Jennings coming back night after night.

"I wouldn't be coming back just for the money," KenJen said. "I think the reason I'm still on Jeopardy! is because I'm having a good time. It's fun to compete and see exactly how good you are and what your limits are."

Surpassing Olmstead's record had been Jennings' aim "for a while," he told Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek. But he wasn't gloating.

"I actually know Dr. Olmstead a little bit, and he's been very supportive," he said.

Some KenJen fanatics living in markets where the show airs midday were denied the chance to see their hero make television history.

According to TVgameshows.net, Jeopardy! was preempted in at least four cities, including Houston, by breaking news of Senator John Kerry's concession of the presidential election.

Apparently, some people just don't understand what's really important.
