Jennings Honored at News Emmys

Peter Jennings may be gone, but he wasn't forgotten at the 27th Annual News and Documentary Emmys.

The late ABC newsman, who succumbed to lung cancer in August 2005, was the recipient of two posthumous awards for "Iraq: Where Things Stand," the last major World News Tonight project from Jennings before he died. The broadcast won for Best Coverage of a Continuing News Story in a Regular Newscast and for Best Story in a Regular Newscast.

The Jennings' wins represented the Monday night award ceremony in a nutshell, as the big stories of 2005--the war in Iraq, the threat of terrorism and the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina--generated the most trophies.

CBS and PBS tied with five wins apiece to lead the winners. The Eyeball's still-ticking 60 Minutes dominated the evening, winning four of the network's five awards for a variety of topics, ranging from the CIA and terror suspects to tsunami survivors in Southeast Asia.

NBC Nightly News took home the prize for Coverage of a Breaking News Story in a Regular Newscast for its "Hurricane Katrina: Moment of Crisis," while CNN's Anderson Cooper 360 was tapped for Best Feature Story in a Regular Newscast for its look at a charity hospital in New Orleans.

The News Emmys also honored PBS' esteemed Bill Moyers with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Other honorary awards went to the Committee to Protect Journalists, the International Press Institute and Reporters Without Borders, all recognized for their efforts to defend press freedom worldwide.

The prizes were doled out by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, and the ceremony will be telecast on C-SPAN at a later date.
