Jay-Z Pal Popped for Pepper Spray
Despite a very public falling out, Jay-Z and R. Kelly's worlds continue to collide.
After their Best of Both Worlds tour collapsed in New York last month, the duo still managed to land the number one slot on the Billboard 200 with their joint album Best of Both Worlds: Unfinished Business.
However, the hit album was about the only positive thing to come out of the collaboration.
Shortly after their tour was canceled, Kelly slapped Jay-Z and concert promoter Atlanta Worldwide with a $75 million lawsuit, accusing Jay-Z of deliberately sabotaging the tour out of "spite and jealousy."
Now, Tyran "Ty Ty" Smith, a member of Jay-Z's entourage, is the latest casualty of Kelly's ire.
According to the Kelly camp, Smith was arrested and charged with third-degree assault for allegedly blasting Kelly and two of his bodyguards with pepper-spray on the night of Oct. 29 as Kelly was returning to the stage at Madison Square Garden.
Kelly had halted his performance and left the stage after claiming that he saw people waving guns in the audience. Police searched the stadium and found nothing suspicious.
Kelly was reportedly headed back out to continue his performance when Smith, upset by the delay in the concert, ambushed him and sprayed him in the face.
The Happy People/U Saved Me singer was rushed to the hospital for treatment, while Jay-Z continued to perform.
Shortly thereafter, the promoter booted Kelly from the tour and canceled the Best of Both Worlds billing, inspiring Kelly's hefty lawsuit and his claim that Jay-Z orchestrated the whole thing.
Meanwhile, instead of scrapping the whole tour, Jay-Z is playing out the remaining dates under the revamped name of Jay-Z and Friends. The buddies who agreed to appear on the reorganized tour include Mary J. Blige and P. Diddy.
It's reportedly the final tour for the rap impresario, who's retiring from his career as an artist to step up as president of Island Def Jam Records.
Jay-Z and his entourage aren't the only adversaries Kelly has had to face of late. The R&B star was also forced to debunk a phony news story circulating the Internet claiming that he had attempted to put the moves on Ashanti's younger sister, Shi Shi Douglas, at an awards show.
Both Ashanti and Associated Press music writer Nekesa Mumbi Moody, whose byline ran with the fake story, denounced it as a hoax.
