Jay-Z, Ice-T Rapped
A new legal snag may bump Jay-Z's "99 Problems" to an even 100.
Marquis Ross, the former member of 2 Live Crew known as Brother Marquis, has filed a federal lawsuit against the hip-hop mogul seeking royalties from "99 Problems," a hit cut off of Jay-Z's 2003 The Black Album.
Also fingered in the suit is Ice-T, who recorded the original version of the track back in 1993 for his Home Invasion album.
Ice-T and DJ Aladdin hold the copyright on the 1993 version; Jay-Z gets the songwriting cred for the 2003 release.
None of that sits well with Ross, who claims he helped pen the original. The Jigga update, Ross says, features lyrics he wrote and a similar beat, and he is seeking a big payday for the Jay-Z hit.
Ross' suit further disses Ice-T for allegedly only giving Ross a "partial payment" of $10,000 just this year for his collaboration on the 1993 song.
Ross has requested back royalties and putative damages from Jay-Z and Ice-T in the suit, filed Monday in New York's U.S. District Court. The rappers are listed under their aliases and their real names, Shawn Carter and Tracy Marrow, respectively.
Neither Ice-T nor Jay-Z were not available for comment--perhaps because both are busy with new day jobs.Jay-Z retired from recording after the release of The Black Album to become president and CEO of Def Jam Records.
T, meanwhile, is flexing his acting chops as a tough investigator on NBC's hit Law and Order: SVU.
Ross' 2 Live Crew outfit was one of the most controversial rap groups ever thanks to the X-rated 1989 album As Nasty as They Wanna Be, which featured the track "Me So Horny." Notoriety didn't translate to sustained record sales, though, and the group called it quits in 1991, but none of the members has had much solo success.
