Jason Alexander Preps for Post-George Era

If actor Jason Alexander's Seinfeld character, George Costanza, were winding down a lucrative gig, he'd probably get set for a sedentary life of gluttony, oversleeping and, ah, self-satisfaction.

Fortunately, the award-winning actor/producer/director is nothing like the TV character. In fact, with speculation that the nine-year-old hit comedy won't be back next season, Alexander will have plenty of work to do.

On Tuesday, his AngelArk Productions (formerly Daeson Entertainment) signed a multi-year deal with Universal Television to develop and produce television comedies and dramas. The deal, which does not guarantee any of Alexander's acting services, calls for Universal to fund AngelArk's development and overhead for these projects.

According to publicist Lori Williams, Alexander's relationship with Universal will not preclude him from returning to Seinfeld should there be a 10th season. "The two are totally not related," she says. "He's been [running his production company] for a while now."

In fact, AngelArk--for which Alexander serves as president--was already in the business of developing feature, network and cable films before the Universal deal and will continue these activities. The company specializes in live-action musicals.

Of course, Alexander is best known for his work as the prototypical pathetic loser George Costanza--for which he has earned numerous Emmy and Golden Globe noms and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series. But over the years, he has also appeared in a number of films (most recently, Love! Valour! Compassion! and Disney's Cinderella) and live theater productions (his work in Jerome Robbins' Broadway won him a Tony in '89 for Best Actor in a Musical).

No word yet as to whether Costanza's alter ego, Art Vandelay, will be inked into any of Alexander's new projects.
