Janet's Super Encore
Let's hope Janet Jackson exerts a little more control over her next Super Bowl cameo.
The "Nasty" singer is ready to make an encore at the big game just a year after enduring a wardrobe malfunction that rocked the world.
Jackson will attend a celebrity scholarship party in Jacksonville sponsored by the Black Family Channel on Feb. 5, the day before the Patriots and Eagles square off. The party is open to the public and tickets will go on sale soon.
Needless to say, the event is not affiliated with the NFL. Jackson remains persona non grata in the league for her split-second, breast-baring incident at the hand of duet partner Justin Timberlake that was witnessed by some 90 million TV viewers, resulted in $550,000 in FCC fines against CBS affiliates and touched off an unprecedented period of censorship and national hand-wringing.
Short of bringing back Up with People for this year's halftime festivities, Fox and the NFL have settled on Paul McCartney to headline the Ameriquest Mortgage Super Bowl XXXIX Halftime Show. (Although the former Cute Beatle has joked--we hope--about mocking Janet with a little nipple action of his own this year. At the very least, McCartney will reveal a list of fall tour dates Feb. 6, per Billboard magazine.)
Other G-rated acts confirmed so far for Super Bowl XXXIX include pregame warm-up artists and red-state favorites the Charlie Daniels Band and "Redneck Woman" Gretchen Wilson, along with American Idol champ Kelly Clarkson and John Fogerty. They will perform in and around Alltell Stadium in Jacksonville during the Fox's NFL Tailgate Party.
Noticeably absent is anything resembling hip-hop (last year's musical offering was particularly rap-heavy, with Kid Rock, P. Diddy and Nelly all in the proverbial house).
But the event is not entirely without flavor. Grammy-winning R&B star Alicia Keys will do a pre-kickoff rendition of "America the Beautiful" as a special tribute to Ray Charles accompanied by 150 members of Charles' alma mater, the St. Augustine-based Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind.
Fans not down with country music or Sir Paul can still get their Viacom fix this year by simply switching channels; MTV, which found itself in hot water for producing last year's halftime festivities, announced it will relaunch a rebranded MTV2 channel during the halftime show Wednesday.
Meanwhile, even the sometimes ribald Super Bowl ads are engaging in restraint. Budweiser has already pulled a Bud Light spot the beer king planned to air during the game. The ad attempts to explain what really happened backstage in Jackson's dressing room prior to the infamous wardrobe malfunction (hint: it involves a Bud Light). The ad can be viewed on Budweiser's Website. Bottoms up.
