Janet Jackson Burgled!
A 19-year-old Janet Jackson fan was busted after allegedly sneaking into the pop-funk diva's dressing room and swiping her stuffed animals while she was on stage performing.
According to police, concertgoer Mario Backman somehow slipped past Jackson's velvet rope and got backstage during Jackson's Wednesday concert at Long Island's Nassau Coliseum.
Backman managed to elude security and made it into Jackson's dressing room, where he snatched a Valentine's Day Minnie Mouse, a Hello Kitty doll, a FDNY baseball cap and some fan mail. (Wonder how much those trinkets would've fetched on eBay?)
He was about to make his getaway when Jackson's manager stumbled upon the pilfering teen.
"Sometime around 10 minutes to 11 p.m. during the concert, her manager, Jamie Mendoza and security people for the Coliseum were walking past dressing room 18 and saw the subject, Mario Backman, in the room," says Detective Sergeant John Giambrone. "He did not have a backstage pass."
According to Giambrone, Backman, a Manhattan native, told Mendoza and the security guards that he belonged to the crew for Jackson's opening act, R&B singer Ginuwine.
"He showed security a piece of paper that said he was with Ginuwine and claimed someone named Joseph gave it to him," says Giambrone. "He couldn't tell them who Joseph was and they notified police, who placed him under arrest."
Backman was booked on third-degree burglary charges, a felony that carries a maximum of three to seven years in jail, and released without bail after his arraignment Thursday. A court date is scheduled for Monday.
Jackson's reps did not return phone calls requesting a comment. But her stuffed animals are said to be safe and sound.
The break-in is just the latest headache for Jackson on her ill-fated All for You tour.
The 35-year-old singer was forced to cancel a number of dates after coming down with a nasty flu bug and chipping her tooth. Another show was nixed when concert equipment failed to arrive in time. Things got so bad, the road-weary Jackson recently told a reporter she might retire from touring permanently.
Before she takes a breather, Jackson is expected to perform February 27 at the Grammy Awards, where she's up for three trophies.
She performs Friday night at First Union Arena in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, before eventually wrapping up her tour in Hawaii's Aloha Stadium on February 17. That concert is scheduled to be broadcast live on HBO.
