Jane's Says New Album in 2003
Jane's Addiction's been caught recording.
The happily reunited alternarockers have announced that Hypersonic--their first batch of new material in over 13 years--will hit record stores next summer followed by a world tour.
The Los Angeles-based band, led by spaced-out frontman Perry Farrell, has recorded more than 20 songs at Henson Recording Studios in their hometown under the guidance of producer Bob Ezrin, who has previously collaborated with the likes of Pink Floyd, Lou Reed and KISS, among others.
"We have had an amazing time creating [our latest record] with our new friends of the Jane's Addition family, producer Bob Ezrin and his partner Brian Virtue," writes guitarist Dave Navarro on the band's official Website (janesaddiction.com). "Bob has a unique and most welcomed perspective in terms of getting the very best out of us as creators and players."
That's quite shocking coming from the notoriously unreliable Jane's which released 1990's groundbreaking alt-rock masterpiece, Ritual De Lo Habitual, then abruptly broke up in 1991 at the height of their fame due to inner-band squabbling and Farrell's continued drug use.
When getting back together for 1997's Relapse Tour and again in 2001 for another trek, Jane's Addiction looked like more and more like a nostalgia band playing the old hits, instead of the rebels who helped herald the early-'90s alternative scene by creating and headlining the Lollapalooza festival, which celebrated piercings, tattoos and mosh pits.
Thus the need for new music, says Navarro, who proclaims the band tighter than ever.
"I think that the combined energies of Bob, Brian and all of us in Jane's Addiction has made this time in the band's career the most comfortable and enjoyable it has ever been," Navarro says. "We have never been happier, freer and more unified."
Joining original members Farrell, Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins in the latest lineup is bassist Chris Chaney, who will be the permanent replacement for original bassist Eric Avery, who opted out of both reunion outings. Flea, the Red Hot Chili Pepper and longtime Farrell friend, took over bass chores during the '97 trek, while ex-Porno for Pyros member Martyn Le Noble filled before departing in August.
"Chris has definitely stepped up to the plate and has been a key factor in helping us expand our creative vision and enthusiasm," says Navarro.
The band is currently whittling down the track list and mixing the new cuts and is planning on debuting the material during a December 28 gig in Denver and a New Year's Eve set in Los Angeles.
Jane's then heads to Australia and New Zealand in January for the Big Day Out Festival. A full-scale world tour is also in the works for the summer following the release of Hypersonic.
