James Garner Joins "8 Simple Rules..."
James Garner is lending the 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter cast a shoulder to lean on.
The veteran thesp is joining the ABC sitcom for at least four episodes this season, the network announced Thursday. Garner will play the father of the recently widowed Cate Hennessy, played by Katey Sagal.
Production begins Monday on the first episode since star John Ritter's sudden death on September 11 of an undetected heart condition. The return episode is expected to run for a full hour and air during early November sweeps.
Garner's character, recently separated from his wife played by Suzanne Pleshette, arrives at the Hennessy home to comfort his daughter and three teenage grandchildren following the death of Ritter's character, newspaper columnist Paul Hennessy.
Pleshette will guest star on the special one-hour episode on November 4, which picks up soon after Paul's funeral. She's not expected to be in all four episodes with Garner.
ABC has scored high ratings this month for the three final episodes completed by Ritter and accompanied by special intros from the surviving cast members. The show, in its sophomore season, went into reruns this week while producers worked to fill his void.
Since announcing they would go on with the show less than 24 hours after Ritter's death, the network has largely kept mum about its plans for the laffer, saying they were entering "unchartered territory."
Network brass has denied speculation that Henry Winkler, a Ritter friend who was to appear in the actor's final and ultimately unaired episode of 8 Simple Rules..., was being eyed to play the Hennessy clan's new father figure. "We have no intention of bringing a dad back into the family at any point in the near future," ABC Entertainment president Susan Lyne said.
However, producers are reportedly trying to bring back some of the guest stars who appeared on the show's freshman season, including Larry Miller, Cindy Williams and John Ratzenberger.
Garner, who most recently starred in CBS' short-lived First Monday, got his big break starring in ABC's western Maverick from 1957 to 1962.
He went on to earn five consecutive Lead Drama Actor Emmy nominations for his role in the '70s hit The Rockford Files on NBC. All told he's been Emmy-nominated 15 times, winning for acting in The Rockford Files in 1977 and for producing the 1987 TV movie Promise.
He was also nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for 1985's Murphy's Romance.
