Jackson Not Sold on Island

Published reports suggest Michael Jackson has forsaken his Neverland Ranch in favor of Bahraini island living. His rep suggests otherwise.

According to the New York Post, the self-proclaimed King of Pop recently plunked down $1.5 million for a quarter-acre of land on one of Bahrain's manmade Amwaj Islands, where he supposedly plans to make his permanent home.

The Amwaj Islands, which took five years to complete, are jam-packed with every luxury convenience imaginable, including top restaurants, a private hospital and an equestrian center, as well as an array of posh retail outlets where Jackson could indulge his fondness for shopping, should he take up residence there.

The islands are within sight of Bahrain's main island, where Jackson has been living as a guest of the royal family since shortly after his acquittal on child-molestation charges in June. The property he was said to have acquired includes two private villas, each with seaside views.

Idyllic as it all sounds, Jackson spokesperson Raymone Bain threw cold water over visions of the popster's newly acquired island paradise Tuesday, claiming that Jackson had in fact not purchased any Amwaj Islands real estate.

"Contrary to published reports, Michael Jackson has not purchased acreage on Bahrain?s Amwaj Islands," Bain said in a statement.

Though Jackson has kept a low profile since the conclusion of his trial, the eccentric star caused a stir over the weekend after he was reportedly discovered in a ladies' restroom at a Dubai, United Arab Emirates, mall, where he was apparently applying makeup, according to published reports.

Jackson, garbed in slacks, a shirt and a traditional Arabic woman's head scarf, called a sheila, was spotted in the restroom by a Tunisian woman, who began snapping photos of him with her camera phone, the Khaleej Times reported.

When Jackson asked the woman to turn over the pictures, she refused, demanding compensation. Police were called to the scene, and the woman was told that demanding money for her pictures was illegal. The photos were subsequently deleted, per the Times.

Dubai Police Colonel Abdul Jalil Mehdi told the Times he believed the non-Arabic-speaking Jackson made an "innocent mistake" in entering the women's room.

Bain's version of events did not include the makeup incident, but backed Mehdi's claim that Jackson had entered the restroom unintentionally.

"Mr. Jackson mistakenly entered a ladies room in Dubai, labeled in Arabic, during an outing with friends," Bain stated. "Upon realizing his mistake, he quickly exited. Upon his exit, he was recognized and a crowd ensued. He had to wait in a nearby bookstore until police arrived to escort him through the crowd."

In between shopping for real estate and taking ill-advised bathroom breaks, Jackson has reportedly been wrapping up work on his charity single to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Last month, Bain said the single was two to three steps away from release.
