Jacko Spooked by Photo?

Sounds like Michael Jackson is camera shy.

To be sure, Earth's most famous surgical mask modeler was in no hurry to put in face time at a Santa Maria, California, courtroom Thursday for day two of the trial in a $21 million breach of contract lawsuit brought against the entertainer by a concert promoter.

Jackson was due to return to the stand in the morning. But, according to Reuters, he laid low until his lawyers could lodge a complaint about a photo snapped of their reclusive client, sans the mask, during his first day of testimony on Wednesday.

The photo, much-clicked on by Netizens, offered an up-close view of Jackson's ever-morphing nose and, in the words of one newsgroup poster, "drawn on beard."

In court Thursday, Judge Zel Canter called the shutterbug who snapped the shot into his chambers. Later, the photographer, Spencer Weiner, told Reuters that Jackson's camp had objected to his work as distracting.

A call to the Los Angeles office of one of Jackson's attorneys, Zia Modabber, was unreturned Thursday.

Though Jackson might not have been a fan of Weiner's work, the photographer was not barred from the trial. A court clerk, however, said she believed that no photos were to be taken inside the courtroom Thursday.

In true show-biz tradition, the Jackson show eventually did go on in Santa Maria, with the popster, who resides at neighboring Neverland Ranch, returning to testify in the afternoon session.

According to reports, it wasn't one of his most stellar performances. Reuters said the 44-year-old Jackson, wearing another red shirt from his apparently extensive collection, "appeared drowsy," and responded to questions, after much prompting, "at a snail's pace."

If Jackson isn't going out of his way to dazzle, it's likely because he is what is known as a hostile witness--in short, he does not want to be there.

But the courtroom is where he is, defending his actions for two never-was 1999 New Year's Eve concerts in Hawaii and Australia.

Promoter Marcel Avram claims Jacko agreed to play four concert dates for him in 1999. But after performing the first two gigs, Jackson "shocked" Avram by pulling the plug on the millennium-minded sets in October 1999, the impresario testified Wednesday.

Jackson's camp has argued it was Avram who canceled the shows, citing slow ticket sales.

On Wednesday, Jackson managed to put together a couple of sentences to express how bummed he was upon learning the concerts had been canned.

"I remember feeling a little bit upset, because I was looking forward to doing the millennium shows," the Bad singer said. "I was so excited about them that I told people in my organization that we should reach the Guinness Book of World Records, because I felt that these would be the most-watched events of all time."

Sort of like the picture.
