Jack White Hushed
Jack White has been sidelined by some bum pipes.
The White Stripes postponed a string of Japanese tour dates after the "Fell in Love with a Girl" rocker was diagnosed with an "acute vocal cord problem."
"As part of his treatment, the doctors have instructed Jack not to speak or sing for the next two weeks," the Detroit duo says in a posting on its Website, www.whitestripes.com.
"We sincerely apologize to our Japanese fans and friends and hope to reschedule dates as soon as we can."
White, 30, and drummer/ex-wife Meg White were due to play gigs in Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka starting Wednesday.
No further details of the Grammy-winning rocker's condition were released, though a spokesperson for the group acknowledged that there were concerns about the effects of traveling causing additional damage to his vocal cords.
But the band's hiatus is only temporary.
"For our friends in New Zealand and Australia, the band looks forward to seeing you at the Big Day Out," the band's statement says.
The White Stripes are expected to be recovered in time to make the six-city festival's opening date, Jan. 20 in Auckland, and continue with stops in Australia's Gold Coast, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Iggy & the Stooges, Franz Ferdinad, Henry Rollins, Kings of Leon, Sleater-Kinney and the Magic Numbers are among the other headliners on the bill.
This is the second time Jack White has wound up on disabled list mid-tour.
In 2003, the low-fi duo was forced to cancel a string of European dates, including two major headlining festivals, when he was involved in a car accident in his native Detroit with former girlfriend Renée Zellweger.
The guitarist suffered a compound fracture to his left index finger, leaving him unable to shred.
Even Meg has racked up her share of injuries.
Several months prior to her partner's finger mishap, the female Striper fractured her left wrist in a fall while promoting their fourth album, Elephant, abroad.
The accident-prone band has been on the road in support of their latest chart topper, Get Behind Me Satan. They hope to reschedule their missed Japan dates later this spring, before Jack White takes time off to welcome his first child with his wife, model Karen Elson.
