Jack White Deals with Anger
Rocker Jack White's going to be living an Adam Sandler movie. And, no, not 50 First Dates.
The White Stripes frontman has been consigned to anger management classes after pleading guilty Tuesday to pummeling a former protégé at a Detroit club last December, the Wayne County Prosecuting Attorney's Office said.
"This was a personal matter and not a press promotion," White announced in a prepared statement outside a Motor City courtroom Tuesday--the same day his victim's new album was released. "I regret allowing myself to be provoked to the point of getting into a fist fight."
It remained unclear clear what incensed White so that he was moved to spit and punch Jason Stollsteimer of emerging rock outfit the Von Bondies on Dec. 13 at the Magic Stick, a bar at Detroit's Majestic Theater Center.
In his statement Tuesday, White allowed only that he was defending the principles of "honor and integrity."
One popular theory says White took exception to criticism Stollsteimer had for the former's production work on the latter's Lack of Communication, the Von Bondies' 2001 indie release.
The Detroit Free Press says it's also been rumored that the bad blood can be traced to a failed romance between White and Von Bondies guitarist Marcie Bolen.
These days, White, 28, is romancing Oscar winner Renée Zellweger, 33, whom he met on the set of Cold Mountain. While the tan-resistant rocker stayed off the red carpet at last week's Academy Awards, he accompanied Zellweger on the post-show party circuit.
Under a deal with prosecutors, White, the recent recipient of two Grammys, kept his calendar open for future award shows and avoided jail time, not to mention a possible felony conviction for aggravated assault, by copping to a guilty plea for assault and battery, a misdemeanor, officials said.
White was ordered to pay a $500 fine, $250 in court fees and undergo an undetermined number of anger-management classes. He's also been ordered to stay away from Stollsteimer, who was in court Tuesday.
The Von Bondies frontman suffered a badly swollen right eye at the fists of the Elephant man. While his appearance has smoothed out, the Detroit Free Press said Stollsteimer still copes with a watery eye as a result of the beating.
Stollsteimer looks to become more notable as a rockin' rocker than a rolled clubgoer with Tuesday's release of Pawn Shoppe Heart, the garage band's Sire/Reprise debut. Spin called the project a revelation--"It will make you forget that there are other songs on Earth, let alone on this album." At one point Tuesday afternoon, Pawn Shoppe Heart was ranked 155th on Amazon.com.
