It's Official: Lovitz on "NewsRadio"

He may not have ever hooked up with Morgan Fairchild (yeah, that's the ticket!), but Jon Lovitz isn't pathologically lying when he says he's the star of an NBC sitcom.

After a few weeks of speculation and some Lovitz soul-searching, the comedian confirmed he'll be taking the place of his former Saturday Night Live costar, slain funnyman Phil Hartman, in NewsRadio.

Lovitz--who gained acclaim for his pathological liar character on SNL in the '80s, and who's had his own series before, the animated The Critic--reportedly reached his decision only after carefully considering whether he felt it right to replace Hartman, a close friend.

"I'm doing this for Phil," said Lovitz, who has guest-starred on the program several times, to Daily Variety. "There's nothing more to say." (Last week, however, Lovitz had more to say, telling Associated Press that he'd do NewsRadio if producers paid him enough.)

Lovitz had been in competition with Patrick Warburton (Seinfeld's Puddy), but seems to have had the inside track all along because he's managed by powerful Brillstein Grey--the same company that produces NewsRadio

Details about Lovitz's role haven't been finalized, but he might play an old friend of Hartman's character, Bill McNeal. There's also no word yet on whether series producers are going forward with plans to open next season with a funeral for McNeal.

Meanwhile, in other TV happenings Monday: Actress Debi Mazur (L.A. Law, Civil Wars) is in as an executive foil to star Fred Savage; out are Sarah Knowlton, Dana Gould and Kate Hodge. Fox has decided not to go forward with comedian Dave Chappelle's self-titled standup-trying-to-make-it-in-New York comedy. Executives at the net--which had ordered six episodes--reportedly didn't like the pilot. Laura Leighton--devious kid sis Sydney on Melrose Place--is switching Aaron Spelling gigs. She'll guest star in the first six episodes of Beverly Hills, 90210 next fall, playing--what the hell else--a conniving, aspiring actress relentlessly perusing her ambition.
