It's Official: Ripa Goes "Live"
With that, a giddy Regis Philbin introduced All My Children star Kelly Ripa as the woman who will replace Kathie Lee Gifford as his new permanent sidekick on Live.
"Kelly has been a natural from the beginning and is going to make a terrific cohost," said Philbin on the Monday installment of his daytime talk show. "We're all looking forward to having a lot of fun."
Ripa, who was a guest on Monday's show, will officially start her new gig on February 12, at which point the show will be renamed Live with Regis & Kelly.
The lively Ripa--whose résumé includes a 10-year, Daytime Emmy-nominated stint playing Hayley Santos on the ABC soap--has been one of the most popular fill-in foils for Philbin, even announcing that she was pregnant during a November appearance on the show.
The widely anticipated unveiling of Ripa as new cohost was far from suspenseful, as various publications reported last week that she had won the sidekick derby.
For the big announcement, Ripa brought husband and All My Children costar Mark Consuelos into the studio to share in the good news. Gushing over his now-famous wife, Consuelos joked that he'll have to change his name to Mark Ripa.
Both Philbin and Ripa will pull double duty for ABC: in addition to cohosting the daytime gabfest, Reeg will keep moonlighting as host of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Ripa will continue to act on the ABC soap.
"I think it's like an ABC policy--you must work two jobs," cracked Ripa on Monday's show, her 10th cohosting appearance.
Added Philbin: "Between the two of us, we've got 40 percent of the schedule covered. If we go down, ABC is over."
Philbin and Ripa engaged in a tit-for-tat banter reminiscent of the Kathie Lee days. When Reeg lifted up his pants leg to reveal an old injury, Ripa teased him by saying his leg badly needed skin cream.
"Let this be the first of many times I'm going to say this," said Philbin in a mock complaint to his producer. "Gelman!!"
The search for a permanent Regis partner had been going on since Gifford left the show last July after 15 years of morning yakking.
Regis had been trying out possible cohosts in the interim, even holding a contest in September in which viewers got a chance to ham it up in the hot seat. Among the rotating gang of sidekicks up for the full-time job: Philbin's wife, Joy, CNBC financial reporter Maria Bartiromo and E! personality Suzanne Sena.
